Phil Brodie

Te Mata’s winemaking team is led by Senior Winemaker Phil Brodie. Having grown up ‘on the land’ in northern Hawke’s Bay, Phil has a natural love and appreciation of the local terroir, the climate, rivers, soil, and sea, and its immense contribution to wine.

He combines this understanding with degrees in Business and Wine Science, and with career experience around the world including Bordeaux (Château Margaux), Burgundy (Clos des Lambrays), California, and South Africa. He is also a national senior wine judge.

He joined Te Mata's winemaking team in 1992 and took full winemaking control in 2018.
Under Phil's guidance, Te Mata Estate has continued to produce internationally recognized wines, including their flagship Coleraine, which has been acclaimed as one of New Zealand's finest red wines. Phil's extensive experience and commitment to excellence have solidified his reputation as one of New Zealand's foremost winemakers.

Comprehensive Winemakers’ Toolkit

Comprehensive Winemakers’ Toolkit

Hawke’s Bay’s range of slopes, plains and climatic differences, long growing season, coupled with low humidity and ample ultra-violet light, give winemakers a comprehensive toolkit to showcase their skills.

Te Mata’s vineyards are spread across several distinct soil types. The Havelock Hills have free-draining, limestone-influenced soils that provide structure and minerality, perfect for Bordeaux-style reds. The Gimblett Gravels are deep, gravelly soils with excellent drainage, known for producing concentrated and powerful Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. And by contrast, the Bridge Pa Triangle has a mix of sandy loam and gravel, ideal for Merlot and other Bordeaux varietals.

And sustainable winemaking is important to Te Mata - they are committed to improving their performance in terms of environmental, social and economic sustainability through the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) programme.

“Coleraine and Awatea are bona fide classics.” Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, USA
