Two Rivers

Marlborough

Two Rivers takes its name from the iconic rivers that feed the wine growing heart of Marlborough’s renowned Wairau and Awatere valleys.

It was in the Awatere Valley, that founder and winemaker David Clouston spent his childhood, and where his family has farmed for five generations. He now lives in the Wairau Valley, where he has made his home and his mark on the wine industry.

Two Rivers is celebrated for producing wines that balance Marlborough's intense fruit flavours with a more ‘European’ elegance and complexity. The estate sources fruit from carefully selected vineyard sites across the region, each contributing distinct characteristics to their Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Rosé wines.
Through a combination of traditional techniques and minimal intervention, they continue to produce premium wines for all occasions.

David Clouston

David brings over 25 years of international winemaking experience to the winery. His CV spans the USA, Chile, Spain, France, and notably, three vintages on the French island of Corsica. In 2004, David returned to Marlborough to establish Two Rivers of Marlborough. His time in Corsica inspired a passion for producing rosé wines, leading to the creation of the acclaimed Isle of Beauty Rosé (which has gained a dedicated following).

David's winemaking philosophy emphasises sustainable practices and minimal intervention. Two Rivers’ winemaking techniques include natural fermentation, aging in concrete egg tanks, large oak cuvees, an assortment of French oak barrels and clay amphoras, as well as bottling wine un-fined and unfiltered to retain complexity and texture.
Beyond Two Rivers, David founded Black Cottage, Clouston & Co., both offering approachable wines that embody his Marlborough heritage.

Two Rivers Many Riches

Two Rivers Many Riches

Two Rivers sources fruit from six key vineyard sites across Marlborough’s sub-regions, each offering unique soil structures and microclimates, and each lending themselves to particular varietals.

The Southern Valleys’ terroir lends itself to Pinot Noir and Chardonnays, The Awatere Valley’s stony soils and cooler climate is perfect for Sauvignon Blanc. Rapuara and Dillons Point support wines with a tropical fruit intensity and flinty minerality, and are ideal for fruit-driven Sauvignon Blanc and Rose. The Ure Valley is rather different, with limestone and schist soils, adding salinity and texture to Sauvignon Blanc.

Such differentiation, is best expressed in vineyard management and winemaking which does little to intervene in the process. Two Rivers believes in hand-harvesting, whole-bunch fermentation, wild yeasts, and a patient approach to allow the wines to showcase their natural complexity.

“Our mission is to harness Marlborough’s intense fruit flavours, while producing elegant wines with purity and a sense of place.”
