Sorrell

Marlborough

Sorrell Wines is a boutique Marlborough label founded by Daniel Sorrell in 2021, after a decade working vintages across France, the US, Australia, and New Zealand.
Dan’s focus is on organic, single-vineyard wines - Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir - from some of Marlborough’s most expressive sub-regions. These are thoughtful, finely tuned wines made in small batches, with a clear respect for both the land and the people farming it.

He believes terroir and exceptional viticulture are crucial to the craft of winemaking, and he’s chosen to work with what he regards as “exceptional vineyards” and growers in Auntsfield, The Wrekin, and Churton - each with very individual characteristics, which he strives to reflect in the wines. “I want to showcase the vineyards and fruit purity” he says, “connecting the wine back to the land it came from”.

Pictured here with his partner (and a fellow winemaker) Roberta, Dan’s winemaking journey began by accident – helping a friend’s harvest in southern France - but really took shape back home, where he studied viticulture and winemaking at EIT in Hawke’s Bay, before diving into vintages with some of the best in the business.

His style? Minimal intervention. He works with hand-picked fruit and wild ferments, keeps oak subtle, avoids fining. For Dan, each vineyard yields its own story: eg The Wrekin Chardonnay is churned from wild yeast and aged in older barrels; his The Wrekin Pinot Noir sees gentle extraction and open-top fermentation.

Dan’s goal isn’t to impose a house style but to craft expressive, well-balanced wines that reflect the vintage, the vineyard, and his own very Kiwi approach to getting stuck in and doing the work.

Careful Farming – Honest Wines

Careful Farming – Honest Wines

Sorrell Wines sources fruit from three distinct Marlborough vineyards, each with its own personality, and farmed organically by people who care about the land. Dan’s built strong relationships with the growers, picking blocks that offer something distinctive: elevation, soil variation, or just that hard-to-pinpoint ‘feel’.

Auntsfield, dating back to 1873, lies on greywacke and loess soils and yields wines with structure and mineral clarity. The Wrekin, a biodynamically farmed hillside vineyard, features gravelly and rocky soils that lend concentration and sharp acidity. Churton, planted on clay-loess over alluvial gravels and dry-farmed, creates a deeply expressive Pinot Noir.

All ferments begin in the vineyard - literally - wild yeast from the site kicks things off. This way, Dan says, the wines stay honest. Nothing showy, nothing formulaic - just smart, satisfying expressions of great places.

“I want to keep pushing things forward and am constantly evolving the style of the wine.” Dan Sorrell
