Folium

Marlborough

Folium Vineyard is an 8 hectare organic estate located in the Brancott Valley of Marlborough. Founded by Takaki Okada in 2011, the vineyard is dedicated to producing premium Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir wines that authentically reflect the unique terroir of the region.

Folium Vineyard's commitment to organic farming, meticulous vineyard management, and traditional winemaking results in wines that authentically express the character of the Brancott Valley terroir. Their portfolio includes both ‘estate’ and ‘reserve’ selections of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, (with the ‘reserve’ wines using fruit from older vines planted in 1996 ) with each showcasing the vineyard's dedication to quality and sustainability. The wines are distinctively European in style, with vintage variation, and a subtlety that complements rather than overpowers food.

Takaki Okada

Originally from Japan, Takaki's passion for wine was ignited during his university years in Hokkaido, where he worked part-time at a wine bar. This experience led him to pursue viticulture studies at the University of California, Davis. In 2003, he moved to New Zealand and spent six years at Clos Henri Vineyard, gaining valuable experience before establishing Folium Vineyard in 2010. He is the ultimate multi-tasker, overseeing all aspects of production, from meticulous vineyard management to hands-on winemaking.

Takaki employs traditional winemaking techniques with minimal intervention. Sauvignon Blanc grapes are whole-bunch pressed and fermented, with the Reserve line utilising indigenous yeasts. The wines mature on fine lees for approximately 10 months before bottling. Pinot Noir grapes are destemmed, undergo ambient-temperature fermentation with wild yeasts, and age in barrel, for 11 to 18 months.

The vineyard's soil, shaped by ancient glacial activity and river systems, is predominantly low-vigour clay-based, which retains sufficient moisture during dry summers, allowing for dry farming without irrigation. This practice encourages broader, and deeper root systems, resulting in more terroir-driven wines, as well as being much more environmentally responsible.

Marlborough's climate, characterised by a wide diurnal temperature range during the growing season, enables grapes to maintain natural acidity while developing complex aromatics and flavours. It’s perfectly suited to growing premium Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

Detailed care in the vineyard starts with pruning in the winter, followed by canopy management, such as shoot and bunch thinning, and leaf plucking during the summer, all the way to hand harvesting at optimum ripeness in the autumn.
