Clos Henri

Marlborough

Clos Henri is a distinguished Marlborough vineyard, established by the renowned Sancerre winegrowing family, Henri Bourgeois. With a legacy spanning 10 generations in France's Loire Valley, the Bourgeois family sought to explore new terroirs, leading them to Marlborough in 2000, and the creation of their meticulously developed Clos Henri, an organically run estate specialising in Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir wines.
Clos Henri's commitment to organic viticulture and traditional French winemaking techniques are part of the reason they produce elegant, textural wines that capture the intense character of Marlborough.

The vineyard encompasses three distinct soil types: clay, gravel, and silt, each imparting unique characteristics to the wines. Visitors can experience these nuances firsthand at the tasting room, set in a quaint, restored chapel amidst the vines.

Damien Yvon

Damien is the face of Clos Henri in Marlborough. Together with the Bourgeois family, he brought the best of his French winemaking heritage to New Zealand to be the on-site winemaker of Clos Henri. He has been with Clos Henri since 2006. Originally from Chinon, France, Damien brings extensive experience from various wine regions, including Bordeaux, California, and Marlborough.

Under his guidance, Clos Henri has embraced organic and biodynamic practices, achieving organic certification in 2013 and implementing biodynamic methods since 2011. His winemaking techniques celebrate simplicity, low intervention and very few additives. In addition, they do not rely on filtering and fining processes in the winery, which supports Damien’s aim to produce elegant and textural Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir wines with distinctive individual character that tell the story of the vineyard and estate.

Taste the Terroirs

In discovering Clos Henri, Rémi and Jean-Marie found a unique site: a crossroads of three unique soil types on one 110 hectare estate (Otira Glacial Stones and the two Waimaunga Clays: Broadbridge Clay and Wither Clay). The Glacial Stones create elegant, mineral wines, whereas the Windblown Waimaunga clays gift intense and generous wines that are textural, rich and complex.

Their experience in Sancerre and cool climate winegrowing has taught the Bourgeois least that high density farming produces smaller amounts of fruit with a higher concentration of flavours.

The complex combination of high-density planting, low vigour, low yields and organic practices, allows Clos Henri to gradually work towards dry farming (no irrigation). As expected, they observe a naturally reduced vigour in the vines, which in turn enhances concentration and minerality.

“All our practices in the vineyard are driven by a respect for the land and working with each soil to ensure wines are crafted with the highest quality and a true sense of place.”
