Trinity Hill

Hawke’s Bay

Trinity Hill is one of Hawke’s Bay’s most respected wineries. Founded in 1993 by winemaker John Hancock and partners Robyn and Robert Wilson, the estate was established with the vision of crafting premium wines that showcased the unique terroir of Hawke’s Bay.

The winery’s early focus was on Bordeaux-style blends and Syrah, recognizing the region’s potential for these varieties. A major turning point came in the late 1990s when Trinity Hill became one of the pioneering producers in the Gimblett Gravels, a sub-region of Hawke’s Bay, with stony, free-draining soils that mirror the terroir of Bordeaux’s Left Bank.
Trinity Hill gained international acclaim with its Homage Syrah, a tribute to the legendary Rhône Valley winemaker Gérard Jaboulet, and has continued to expand its portfolio with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and alternative varietals.

The Influence of the Gravels

The Influence of the Gravels

Trinity Hill’s terroir is defined by the unique Gimblett Gravels. The combination of climate, soil, and geography provides ideal conditions for producing world-class wines, particularly Syrah, Chardonnay, and Bordeaux-style blends.

The area, in particular, benefits from extra warmth due to its stony soils, which retain heat during the day and radiate it at night. This extends the growing season, allowing grapes to ripen fully while maintaining fresh acidity and fine tannins.

These soils also have low fertility, encouraging vines to develop deep root systems and focus their energy on producing small, concentrated berries. The result is wines with depth, intensity, and structure.

Trinity Hill follows sustainable and minimal-intervention practices, emphasising site expression. Hand-harvesting, careful canopy management, and traditional winemaking techniques ensure that the terroir is evident in every bottle.

"The goal has always been to grow and make world-class wines in a sustainable manner. This includes being considered one of New Zealand’s leading wine brands." Warren Gibson
