Tiraki

Marlborough

Tiraki Wines is a small, family-owned winery in Marlborough’s Wairau Valley, launched in 2020 by Josh, EllaRose and Tyler Hammond returning to their family’s Longfield Farm, where six generations have farmed the land since 1870. The name Tiraki, meaning “clearing of the sky” in te reo Māori, reflects the natural phenomenon created by the Marlborough hills – a unique place to make wine.

Tiraki is New Zealand’s first B Corp certified wine label, a commitment that shapes everything from vineyard practices to packaging. Certification reflects their focus on ethical business, environmental responsibility, and community wellbeing.

The wine range includes Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Rosé, and Pinot Noir - all crafted with an emphasis on clarity, texture, and restraint. Their Chardonnay is especially compelling: wild fermented, lees-aged, and delicately oaked, it delivers fine citrus, flint, and subtle saline depth in a crisp, mineral-driven style.

Josh Hammond

Josh Hammond (pictured here with the rest of his family) brings broad experience to Tiraki, shaped by vintages in California, Burgundy, and England, as well as senior winemaking roles at Villa Maria and Isabel Estate in Marlborough. His approach blends international perspective with a deep understanding of Marlborough’s vineyards and microclimates.

His winemaking approach is grounded in minimal intervention. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermentations are wild, and fining is avoided to preserve the natural character of the fruit. Each parcel is handled separately, with decisions in the winery shaped by differences in elevation, soil, and aspect. His approach is about amplifying what’s already in the fruit.

This method is especially clear in Tiraki’s Chardonnay, which is fermented with wild yeast and aged on lees, with careful use of oak. The wine is fresh and balanced, showing bright citrus notes, gentle texture, and a clean, long finish - a thoughtful, restrained take on Marlborough Chardonnay.

Longfield Farm and the Wairau Valley

Longfield Farm and the Wairau Valley

Tiraki’s vineyard is located on Longfield Farm in the Southern Valleys sub-region of Marlborough, an area known for its clay-rich soils and gentle north-facing slopes. Unlike the stonier soils of the Wairau Plains, the clays here retain moisture and moderate vine stress, resulting in wines with broader texture, fine acidity, and savoury depth.

The vineyard benefits from Marlborough’s hallmark diurnal range - warm, sun-filled days balanced by cool nights - allowing for slow, even ripening and the retention of natural acidity. Sauvignon Blanc grown here takes on more citrus and herbal tones, less tropical than valley-floor examples, and with greater mid-palate weight.

Tiraki’s farming is certified sustainable (NZWG), with low-input methods and an emphasis on biodiversity. Native plantings and rotational grazing support soil health and resilience. The result is a site that yields vibrant, structured wines, and a vineyard culture built on balance, longevity, and close observation.

“Climb the mountains of Marlborough and you’ll witness how the rugged ridge lines cut through the clouds, leaving a sun-drenched haven between them.”
