Squawking Magpie

Hawke’s Bay

Squawking Magpie is a boutique winery located in the renowned Gimblett Gravels wine-growing district of Hawke's Bay - synonymous with the production of world-renowned wines. The incredibly stony soils of the ancient bed of the Ngaruroro River and this warm location, create perfect conditions for ripe, full-bodied and gravelly-textured red grapes.

It all began in 1981, when founder Gavin Yortt, first planted vines in the region's Irongate Vineyard on Gimblett Road. Gavin was one of the three first growers in the Gravels.
Over 40 years later, Squawking Magpie has developed long history of producing outstanding wines. The portfolio is diverse, though it is their Reds - Syrah’s and Merlot/Cabernet blends - for which they are especially known, Stoned Crow Syrah 2019 & 2021 and The Nest 2022 being good examples.

Exceptional Winemaking Meets Extraordinary Place

Exceptional Winemaking Meets Extraordinary Place

From the very first plantings, Gavin’s emphasis has been placed on creating outstanding wines by focusing on viticultural excellence. He and his team hold the firm belief that great wine comes from great grapes.

It also helps that Gavin chose an exceptional location - especially for growing red varieties – the Gimblett Gravels. Once, the Omahu channel of the Ngaruroro River, the ‘soil’ consists of deep gravels with pockets of sand, silt and clay at various depths.

In the warm temperatures, these gravelly soils heat up, and act as a thermal mass, and so and extend the ripening period - conditions likened to those in Bordeaux.

The resulting fruit, combined with Jenny Dobson's expertise, ensures that Squawking Magpie's wines have elegance and finesse, truly reflecting the uniqueness of the Gimblett Gravels region.

“Understanding vineyards and appreciating nature is an ongoing joy, allowing me to bring the best possible expression of both to each bottle.” Jenny Dobson
