Seresin Estate, located in Marlborough’s Wairau Valley, was founded by Michael Seresin in 1992. The vineyards are spread across the warm, stony valley floor, and up into the gentle slopes of the Omaka Valley to the south. Their specially chosen sites are planted with Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinto Gris.
Certified BioGro organic and biodynamically farmed, the vineyards are rich in biodiversity. The estate’s winemaking approach is based on care in the vineyard, and minimal intervention in the winery, allowing the characteristics of the fruit and the season to emerge, and the wines to express a sense of time, with wines from each harvest subtly different from its predecessor.
The estate's distinctive handprint logo symbolizes the ‘handmade’ philosophy that guides their artisanal winemaking process.
Michael Seresin is one of those rare people who has managed to make a name for himself in two quite distinct fields: he is both a distinguished cinematographer and film maker, and a highly successful winemaker.
Michael's passion for wine was influenced by his time in Italy, where he embraced the culture of food and wine he experienced there. Under his guidance, Seresin Estate has become a benchmark for sustainable winemaking.
He has seen several esteemed winemakers contribute to its legacy of organic and biodynamic winemaking, including the highly respected Clive Dougall, and Tamra Kelly-Washington.
The hallmark of his approach is to be patient – “a new world winery with an old-world approach” – using wild fermentation to produce wines with added savouriness and with more mouth-watering textures and flavours. They also show a unique sense of place.
Seresin Estate is more than a vineyard with three properties containing vineyards, olive groves, orchards and farmland with chickens, cattle and sheep, all run organically and embracing biodynamic principals – a higher level of organics comprising a metaphysical approach to achieve an ecological and sustainable farming system.
Essentially that means no herbicides, fungicides or any chemical spray whatsoever and no artificial fertilisers instead using natural composts, teas and biodynamic preparations along with companion planting of different crops that assist nutrient uptake, pest control and pollination. To quote Michael Seresin, “In essence its traditional agriculture, it’s how it was done before the chemical-age came along, and wine’s been around a lot longer than the chemicals have.”
The result are wines which that reflect the land’s natural energy, structure, and complexity.
