Schubert Wines is a boutique winery founded in 1998 by Kai Schubert and Marion Deimling, both trained at Germany’s renowned Geisenheim University. After working in prestigious wine regions across Europe, North and South America, and Australia, they set out to find the ideal location for Pinot Noir. That search led them to Martinborough, in New Zealand’s Wairarapa region, where they saw both the potential of the land and the chance to build something enduring.
From the beginning, Kai and Marion have shaped Schubert Wines with equal parts ambition and precision - Kai bringing bold vision and global perspective, Marion grounding the project in technical excellence and quiet discipline. Their partnership is at the heart of the winery’s success. Today, Schubert Wines is internationally respected for wines that are expressive, structured, and uncompromising in quality, with the vast majority exported to discerning markets across the world.
At Schubert Wines, Kai and Marion employ a minimalist, hands-on approach, emphasizing traditional techniques that allow the unique characteristics of their terroir to shine. Their commitment to organic practices fosters healthy soils, clear waterways, and a thriving ecosystem, ensuring that each wine authentically reflects the natural beauty of the Wairarapa region.
While Kai often stands as the public face of the brand, it is Marion’s meticulous palate, scientific rigour, and quiet determination that shape the identity of the wines just as profoundly.
This dedication to sustainability and quality has garnered attention from connoisseurs and critics alike, solidifying Schubert Wines' reputation for producing wines of outstanding character, complexity, balance, and grace.
Schubert's vineyards span 14 hectares, closely planted in the traditional European style to encourage low yields and concentrated flavours. The Wairarapa region offers a unique blend of topography, ancient geology, and a cool climate similar to Europe's renowned wine-growing areas, with the added advantage of long, dry autumns. The soils, formed by old river sediments, provide ideal conditions for Pinot Noir cultivation.
This distinctive terroir, combined with Schubert's commitment to organic and sustainable viticulture, results in wines that are a pure expression of their environment.
By prioritizing soil health, biodiversity, and water stewardship, Schubert Wines ensures that their vineyards not only produce exceptional grapes but also contribute to the preservation of the region's natural resources.
