Central Otago
Prophet’s Rock is a boutique winery in Central Otago, renowned for producing elegant Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Riesling.
The name Prophet’s Rock pays homage to a 19th-century gold prospector, capturing the spirit of exploration and discovery. Their vineyards were strategically planted on ancient glacial terraces in Bendigo in 1999 and 2000, chosen for their unique soils and ideal climate for cultivating cool-climate varietals.
Their vineyards yield wines that reflect the unique terroir of this remarkable region. With a focus on low-intervention winemaking and a dedication to sustainable practices, every bottle tells the story of the land.
Prophet’s Rock is widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s most distinctive wineries, blending Old World inspiration with New World terroir to create truly exceptional wines.
Born in Hamilton, New Zealand, Paul’s winemaking journey began in Marlborough but is influenced by his extensive international experience, particularly his work in France, where at Maison Kuentz-Bas in Alsace, Paul became the first non-French head winemaker since the estate’s founding in 1795.
Paul joined Prophet’s Rock in 2005. His passion for cool-climate viticulture has been instrumental in shaping their winemaking philosophy. His respect for the natural characteristics of the vineyards is reflected in his commitment to minimal intervention winemaking.
A notable collaboration in Paul's career is the Cuvée Aux Antipodes, a partnership with François Millet of Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé in Burgundy. This project, initiated in 2015, involves François traveling to New Zealand annually to craft a special cuvée of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, blending Old World tradition with New World terroir.
The winery's vineyards are situated in Bendigo, a subregion of Central Otago renowned for its elevation, soil diversity, and extreme climate. The unique combination of ancient soils, diverse microclimates, and beautiful scenery contributes to wines that are as expressive and exceptional as the land itself.
Home Vineyard sits on a north-facing terrace high above the river terraces of the Cromwell Basin and the mountains of the Pisa Range. It was established with Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, with Chardonnay, Muscat and Gewurztraminer coming into production soon after.
At the rugged southern end of Bendigo, the Rocky Point Vineyard is a striking site with some of the steepest slopes in Central Otago. The vineyard rises from 226 meters to 351 meters, offering breathtaking views of Lake Dunstan and the surrounding landscapes. Rocky Point is planted in Pinot Noir, Riesling and Pinot Gris."
