Isabel Estate

Marlborough

Isabel Estate is one of the original Marlborough vineyards and part of the heritage of the Marlborough wine region. Mike Tiller is reported to have seen the land which was to become the Isabel Estate in 1980, when flying over it. He and his wife Robyn built a winery on the site and named it in honour of his mother, Isabel. Their ambition was to produce ultra-premium classic grape varieties that were a true expression of Marlborough.
Throughout the 1980s the couple planted key noble varieties Chardonnay followed by Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. The chosen parcel of land delivered fruit of exceptional quality.

Their small and dedicated team is entirely focused on single estate wines that are grown, produced and bottled within the boundaries of its estate, and represent a true expression of their provenance.

Benefits of Heritage and Place

Benefits of Heritage and Place

Isabel Estate is located in the Wairau Valley and is one of the early Marlborough vineyards, with some of the oldest vines in Marlborough on original rootstock. The estate occupies 54 hectares with 45 of those dedicated to vineyard under canopy.

The estate spans a unique parcel of land near Renwick village, characterised by free-draining gravel soils with a sublayer of tight clay, which aids in water retention. This terroir, combined with Marlborough's extended sunshine hours and cool growing season, allows for the slow ripening of grapes, resulting in wines with intense flavours and aromas.
Notably, Isabel Estate maintains a dense vine planting strategy, doubling the usual number of vines per hectare in Marlborough. This approach increases competition among vines, leading to smaller berries and enhanced flavour concentration and complexity resulting in wines of distinction and character.

“Respect the soil where the grapes grow and allow the expression of the unique characters of each vineyard and variety to shine in the wine.”
