Framingham

Marlborough

Framingham Wines, established in 1981, is a boutique winery located in the Wairau Valley of Marlborough. The original vineyard was established by Wellington engineer Rex Brooke-Taylor who took the name Framingham from his ancestral hometown near Norwich, England.

Renowned for its innovative approach to winemaking, Framingham produces a diverse range of high-quality wines, including Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir.

The winery is particularly celebrated for its Riesling, sourced from some of the region’s oldest Riesling vineyards, leading Jancis Robinson, MW to call Framingham "New Zealand's finest Riesling producer". Framingham's winemaking philosophy emphasises individuality and experimentation, crafting wines that reflect both regional characteristics and he region's terroir and the team's creative spirit. In addition to their commitment to quality winemaking, Framingham fosters a vibrant community through the Framingham Social Club, celebrating fine wines, music, and events.

Andrew Brown

Andrew Brown joined Framingham as head winemaker in January 2020, replacing Dr Andrew Hedley, after 18 years in the role. A highly regarded winemaker, Brown had previously spent seven years at Framingham as assistant winemaker and understudy to Hedley, before working as consultant in regions including Oregon, Central Otago and Alsace, as well as a spell at Waipara Hills as winemaker, before returning to Framingham.

Riesling has always been a favourite of Andrew’s due to its stylistic versatility, and he’s been instrumental in maintaining Framingham’s reputation as one of New Zealand’s leading producers, winning numerous awards and accolades. While Andrew is clearly proud of that success with Riesling, he is keen on building a higher profile for their other varieties, which can also be exceptional.

The Place Where Tradition and Creativity Meet

The Place Where Tradition and Creativity Meet

First planted in 1981 with what is now amongst the oldest Riesling vines in Marlborough, Framingham’s Wairau Valley vineyard is based on warm, well drained stony soils. The alluvial soils of the estate were formed by the sedimentation of the Wairau River.

In the warm centre of the valley, with a low rainfall and relatively low frost risk, they can harvest controlled yields at desired ripeness. Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Viognier, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are all grown on their Wairau Valley estate. Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir are also sourced from select contract growers in the same valley.

Framingham is organically certified, and accredited under the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand programme, and the team takes a low impact approach to vineyard management with a strong environmental focus."

“Absolutely don't chase mass appeal and volume with Riesling as that is often the path to rubbish.” - Andrew Hedley
